Son Kul Lake is one of the most visited lakes in Kyrgyzstan and is included in many tour programs. Despite of this fact, it preserved its pristine nature and has a charm of nomadic life as local people from all over Naryn region move up here to leave their livestock graze in reach meadows in summer. There is no transport going to Son Kul lake on regular basis, so you can rent a car in Bishkek and get there within 7-8 hours.
Son Kul lake is the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan after Issyk Kul lake and lies at the altitude of 3016 meters. It is 30 km long and 18 km wide, the maximum depth makes 13 meters. The lake is surrounded by mountain plateau and has no trees. There are four roads leading to Son Kul lake: Kalmak Ashu pass, 33 parrots pass, Moldo Ashu pass and Kara Keche pass.
Son Kul lake is very popular for local and foreign tourists at the same time. There are many tours that pass here. The main purpose of visit is to relax, isolate oneself from hectic cities and enjoy beautiful nature, calmness and harmony. Tourists can learn a lot about nomadic culture staying in yurts of local shepherds or local communities providing such services.
