Karaganda

Karaganda is the fourth largest city in Kazakhstan with a population of almost half a million people. The name of city comes from a bush name “caragana” which is abundant in this area. The city is located 270 km south-east from Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan. To make your trip go smoothly, rent a car. 

Karaganda is a young city of a little more than 80 years. During your tour to Karaganda you can visit many sites to visit including 50 historical monuments, theaters and museums. The territory of Karaganda was first settled in 1856 due to the small scale coal mining. In 1934 it received the status of a city and thanks to the appearance of railroad, it started to develop quickly. The city got its most popularity for two camps for repressions during II World War. It is one of the most industrialized cities in Kazakhstan. There is coal mining, iron, steel, cement plants and other food and light industries operating in the area.
