Toktogul

Toktogul is the name for a town and water reservoir in 350 km distance south-west of Bishkek. Driving on the Bishkek – Osh highway on a rent car, one can barely believe this huge water source built by human hands. Its emerald green and blue waters spreading over a few kilometers create a splendid view all over the route. It is possible to stop by and swim in it or spend a night in nearby guesthouses on the way. 

The construction of Toktogul reservoir was completed in 1974. For building of the dam there were removed 16 local communities. The Toktogul hydroelectric station cascade includes two stations - Toktogulskaya with a capacity of 1200 MW and Kurpsayskaya with a capacity of 800 MW. As of July 22, 2010, the volume of water was 18 billion 207 million cubic meters. The surface of the area is 284 km². The reservoir plays a huge role in the economy of the country.

The reservoir is perfect for fishing as there are a number of local fish such as marinka, pikeperch, carp, sazan, and trouts.
