Almaty

Almaty is one of the biggest cities in Kazakhstan, located at the foothill of Tien Shan mountain system, Zaili Ala Too range. The altitude varies from 800 to 1,000 meters above sea level. Almaty remains the main cultural, educational and business center of Kazakhstan. If you want to start your tour in Almaty, rent a car and explore the entire country with flexibility and comfort. 

From the independence to 1997 it functioned as the capital city of Kazakhstan, before it was removed to modern Nur-Sultan by degree of the first president of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.Nazarbayev. The following year it received a special status. The city is an important transportation hub of the country and industrial center; it has food processing, light and heavy industry functioning on its territory. 

The name Almaty came from Kazakh language, meaning the “father of apples” as it is the home-town of the famous variety of apples known as “aport”. Eight thousand hectares of apples occupy the city’s parks, gardens, squares and boulevards. There is a huge nature reservation by the town called Ile- Ala Tau Park.
