Naryn town is located in the south-eastern part of Kyrgyzstan, in a distance of 350 km far from Bishkek. There are many local transport means available each day back and forth. It is also possible to rent a car in Bishkek to get there.
Naryn town is an administrative center of Naryn region, the largest one among the seven administrative units in Kyrgyzstan. It has four main subregions: At Bashy, Ak Talla, Naryn and Jumgal. The main economical production of the region is livestock, wool, meat, wheat, and potatoes. Naryn is not a popular tourist destination just by itself, but it is mainly used as transit town before entering to China through Torugart border. From Naryn you can drive to Tash Rabat caravanserai, Son Kul lake, Kazarman village and Kel Suu lake, while with Chui and Issyk Kul region, it is connected with Bishkek – Torugart highway.
The town is situated on both banks of Naryn river, the largest river in Kyrgyzstan that forms Toktogul reservoir that operates two hydroelectric stations. The population makes about 40, 000 people, mainly Kyrgyz. The altitude is 2, 200 meters above sea level.
Naryn was established in 1868 as a fortress to protect the caravan route between Kashgar and Jetisuu (Semirechie) under the direction of Russian Governor – General K. Kauffman. The town has Fine Arts Gallery, local ethnography museum, main square and local bazaar to visit. In a distance of 30 km to the east, there is a beautiful gorge named Salkyn Tor with a river, spruce forests and beautiful views where you can spend a day out.
